First, remember to waterproof your shoes: this protects them from stains and helps them wear out less quickly. Also, consider having a rubber sole added underneath the leather sole to protect it (done by a cobbler).
Maintenance depends on the materials you have chosen:
- For smooth leather: Clean with a damp sponge or a cleansing milk. Nourish with moisturizing cream and apply shoe polish. Waterproof.
- For nubuck or suede leather: Clean with a crepe brush or a suede eraser. Nourish and recolor with a color renovator (either colorless or matching the shoe). Waterproof.
- For patent leather: Clean with a damp sponge or cleansing milk. Nourish with a special patent leather product (such as Saphir's Riff).
- For fabric or synthetic materials: Clean with a damp sponge and waterproof.
